They say that Mixed Martial Arts can be subdivided into 4 key disciplines:

1. Jiu-Jitsu
2. Wrestling
3. Muay Thai
4. Boxing

If you were limited to train only 2 disciplines at the most, which two disciplines would you prioritize? Otherwise stated, which 2 disciplines in your opinion are the more important ones?

My answer would be Boxing and Jiujitsu. The likes of BJ Penn, Nogueira and Demian Maia are champions/ fighters at the top of their respective divisions whose arsenals are primarily just Jiujitsu and Boxing based. I think muay thai and wrestling are just secondary elements of MMA. But thats just me.

GSP = sexy

Bruce Lee's take on MMA:
Kicking Range
Punching Range
Trapping Range
Clinching Range
Grappling Range

that is my approach, minus the trapping range. i divide martial arts into "ranges." like medieval combat. artillery, long range weapons, cavalry, and melee combat. you can't just always storm the castle directly. you need a blend of everything.

Thaiboxing take on striking:
Punches beat Kicks,
Knees beat Punches,
Elbows beat Knees,
Kicks beat Elbows.

basically, you can't rely on one to win. it's a rock-paper-scissors thing.

If I had to choose only two, it would have to be Muay Thai and BJJ.

i think it really depends on what the situation dictates.

for me, if I feel to go on the offensive, I'd go for muay thai + wrestling.

for defensive mode, I'd go for BJJ and muay thai.

but really, it depends on what's going on.

that is what makes MMA unique. the "ground and pound" as a separate entity.

It'd be great if there were an offshoot of submission wrestling where ground and pound was allowed. that would be brutal.
